The main intension of this program is to build up a network of nature friendly dive operators in service according to eco-friendly ethics. Due to variety of activities the project will also guide to enhance examining of coral reefs and enhanced community alertness.

Initiation and coordination of this project is done by East Asian Seas Regional Coordinating Unit (EAS/RCU) as to mainly increase alertness in public and organizational practices that will help the preservation of coral reefs and reduce unsustainable tourism practices. "Green Fins" was commenced to local dive network leaders from Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia at the "The Planning Workshop for "Green Fins" Local Network Leaders" in 2004.

For environmentally sustainable diving and snorkeling the partakers settled on the "Green Fins" membership Code of Conduct and Mission Statement.

Three types of assessments have been prepared to assess the project and for the observance to the Code of Conduct.

The three types of assessments are:

(i)  Self assessment on dive operator twice in a year
(ii) Visitors assessment of the dive operator
(iii) Network leader’s assessment  twice in a year.

Green Fins Code of Conduct 

Mission: "To look after and safeguard coral reefs by establishing and executing eco-friendly guidelines to endorse a sustainable diving tourism industry."

Expectations from a Green Fins member:

  • Adoption of Green Fins mission statement.

  • To put on view adopted Green Fins agreement for dive operators.

  • To stick with Green Fins 'Friendly Diving and Snorkeling guidelines' and act as liable role model for visitors.

  • Contribution in regular underwater cleanups at dive operator chosen sites.
    Partaking in the progress and execution of a mooring buoy course, and energetically use moorings, drift or hand place anchors for boats.

  • Excluding the sale of corals and other aqua life at the dive operation.
    Regular participation in coral reef observation, and reporting coral reef examination data to a regional coral reef database.

  • Afford ample garbage facilities on board facility's vessels and deal with dutifully.
    Function under a "minimum discharge" guidelines.

  • Stand for by all local, regional, national, and international ecological laws, policy and customs.

  • Offer visitors with an elucidation of Green Fins 'Friendly Diving and Snorkeling Guidelines' in pre-dive seminars (UNEP Multilingual pre-dive briefing handouts, multimedia, posters, and videos).

  • Endow with guidance, briefings, or literature for staff and visitors regarding good ecological practices for snorkeling, diving, boating, marine wildlife interface, and other marine pastime activities.

  • Present workforce and visitors with public consciousness and ecological materials (books, pamphlets, fish ID books, etc).

  • Grant visitors with details on local marine secluded areas, green rules and policies.

  • Endorse firm "NO TOUCH" rule for all reef diving and snorkeling.

 "Environmentally Friendly Standards for Dive Operations" adapted from the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL).

This project is executed with one leading organization in every country by the network of dive operators in Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines. The responsibility of growing the network is taken by the foremost organizations in their respective countries and to generate educational and public attentiveness materials and certificates. The e EAS/RCU organizes the project activities and is in charge for the dissemination of the produced materials and follow up activities.
